Wood Green Community Diagnostic Centre wins prestigious HSJ Partnership Award

On 23 March, the Wood Green Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) beat strong competition from nine other innovative healthcare projects around the UK to take home the ‘Best Consultancy Partnership within the NHS’ award at the 2023 Health Service Journal Partnership Awards.

Wood Green CDC opened in autumn 2022 and is a purpose-built ‘one-stop shop’ healthcare space in The Mall Shopping Centre, Wood Green. It offers NHS scans and tests including x-rays, ultrasounds, blood tests and ophthalmology (eye) scans. MRI and CT scans will also be available later in the year.

The project to create Wood Green CDC was led by North Central London Integrated Care Board and includes close collaboration with and between Whittington Health NHS Trust and Capital and Regional, a UK property investment trust that specialises in community shopping centres.

The HSJ judges said they felt Wood Green CDC’s winning award entry was a great example of partnership working with the strengths of differing skills bought together. “There is great community engagement and it felt like a true partnership with expertise and knowledge.”

Opening new community diagnostic centres was recommended in a 2020 review of NHS diagnostics services by Professor Sir Mike Richards. By investing in new staff and technology and offering people NHS scans and tests in more local and convenient locations, community diagnostic centres are helping to diagnose health conditions earlier, faster, and more accurately, are cutting patient waiting lists and are freeing up space for urgent care at busy acute hospitals.

Three other healthcare improvement projects led by in North Central London Integrated Care Board made the finals in other HSJ Partnership Award categories including:

  • Estates Optimisation Award Finalist: A second CDC in north central London – at Finchley Memorial Hospital. This project converted an existing community hospital site into a CDC, which has seen over 100,000 patients since August 2021.
  • Primary Care Project of the Year Award Finalist: A project to convert paper patient records to digital files which freed up clinical space and was recognised as “a pearl of a project”.
  • Most Effective Contribution to Integrated Health and Care Award Finalist: A project across seven organisations to create a digital staff ‘bank’ for healthcare workers across north central London; a partnership between seven London-based public and private sector organisations.

We’re now looking forward to finding out whether our other north central London community diagnostic centre at Finchley Memorial Hospital wins in two other award ceremonies in the summer. Watch this space!
