The Giving Up Loving Pop (GULP) programme, led by NHS North Central London Integrated Care Board (NCL ICB), recently received royal recognition with a visit from His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
GULP aims to reduce sugary drink consumption among Key Stage 2 children, encouraging water-only commitments in schools. Delivered in partnership with the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, the programme has reached 400-600 pupils across 20 primary schools in Haringey and Enfield over the past two terms.
During his visit on October 15th, The Duke observed the interactive workshops firsthand. The sessions, including the popular ‘Sugar Detectives’ activity, teach children to identify hidden sugars in drinks while promoting healthier hydration habits. This initiative is particularly targeted at areas of greatest need, tackling inequalities in dental health and supporting long-term well-being.
GULP’s success demonstrates the importance of partnerships in improving public health. By collaborating with the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, NCL ICB has delivered an engaging and impactful programme that inspires children to make healthier choices.
Building on this year’s achievements, NCL ICB hopes to expand the GULP programme to reach even more schools next year, continuing its mission to create healthier communities across North Central London.
