The Muswell Hill Practice opened to patients on Monday 22 August 2022 from its fantastic new multi-million pound healthcare facility at 54 Muswell Hill, N10 3ST.
Located just a short walk away from the GP practice’s former site, the NHS funded fit-out provides a larger and more spacious surgery than the previous site at Dukes Avenue, and offers improved facilities for both patients and staff.
There are eleven consultation rooms in total, all of which are concentrated at ground-floor level and fully accessible for patients. A disabled parking bay is also available at the site. An area of the ground floor space will be used to provide a community hub for resources and group consultations, supporting health education and patient self-care.
Two further floors provide office accommodation for clinical and administrative staff as well as a dedicated space for clinicians to undertake phone and e-consultations. This supports the digital healthcare agenda, facilitating new ways of working for GPs and clinical staff while offering patients more flexible, convenient access to primary care services.
The additional consulting and treatment rooms will enable GPs and the wider practice team, including practice nurses, pharmacists and healthcare assistants, to support the delivery of a broad range of services for patients, meeting current as well as future primary care demands.
The extra space is more conducive to collaborative working and provides greater flexibility for staff training opportunities too. As an established accredited teaching practice, this will further enhance the practice’s ability to attract, train and retain GPs of the future, thereby supporting a more sustainable local primary care workforce.
The practice relocated from its former cramped and outdated premises in a converted Edwardian residential property, as it no longer had the capacity to support its growing list size of over 15,000 patients. The expanded capacity that the new site offers means that the practice can accommodate future population growth in the patient list size.
The £3 million scheme, funded by NHS England through the Estates and Technology Transformation Fund, involved a range of partners over a number of years to shape the plans and make them become a reality. The new surgery building is leased from Haringey Council and designed by specialist healthcare architects in close collaboration with the GP practice team, with support from NHS North Central London Integrated Care Board (and its predecessor North Central London Clinical Commissioning Group), to ensure the new facilities met the needs and requirements of this busy practice. Borras Construction Ltd undertook the fit-out works on behalf of the practice.
The Muswell Hill Practice development represents the first in a series of exciting primary care estates improvement projects, funded through a £15 million investment programme, which aims to transform GP practice premises across the borough of Haringey. It will mean that patients can benefit from improved modern and accessible facilities that support the provision of high-quality primary care.
It is envisaged that these modern state-of-the-art developments will provide a more attractive workplace environment and inspire GPs and other healthcare professionals to come and work in Haringey, securing a more sustainable primary care workforce for the future.
Dr Amanda Sutton, Dr Neil Manttan and Dr Natasha Smeaton, the GP Partners of The Muswell Hill Practice, said: “We are thrilled that our impressive new building is finally open to the public. We had outgrown our old premises at Dukes Avenue, but the new site means our patients will really benefit from a bright, modern and spacious building, with good access for people with disabilities and better facilities for children and families. It will allow us to expand our existing services and provide high quality care to the population of the area. A great working place for our staff too! We’re looking forward to welcoming patients here.
“We would like to thank all our partners for making this happen, including NHS England, NHS North Central London Integrated Care Board (previously North Central London Clinical Commissioning Group), Haringey Council, Borras Construction Ltd, Catherine West MP, Councillor Pippa Connor and importantly our patients and local community for all their support.”
Rachel Lissauer, Director of Integration for Haringey, NHS North Central London Integrated Care Board, said: “We are really pleased to see The Muswell Hill Practice move into its new accommodation. The new, modern and spacious surgery will ensure a better experience for patients and will help our hard-working GP practice team to provide high quality services now and into the future.”
Councillor Mike Hakata, Deputy Leader of Haringey Council said: “It is wonderful to see the upgrading of the new Muswell Hill Practice to an enhanced, state of the art healthcare facility, better equipped to meet the needs of the community in the 21st Century.
“The health and wellbeing of our residents is our core focus at Haringey Council and this new centre is a fantastic example of partnership working between the council and the local NHS that will improve healthcare in the area and support the health and wellbeing of residents.”
Robert Broadfield, Joint Managing Director, Borras Construction Ltd, added: “My thanks goes out not only to the hard work of the project team, but also to all those involved with its delivery; the collaboration, hard work and dedication lay testament to the success of this project, a valuable asset to the community.”
