A national shortage of pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) is currently affecting patients across the UK, including in North Central London. PERT is essential for people whose pancreas doesn’t produce enough digestive enzymes to break down food properly.
The shortage, caused by manufacturing and supply issues, has impacted access to:
-
Creon® 10,000 and 25,000
-
Nutrizym® 22 capsules
-
Pancrex V® capsules and powder
Some products may remain in short supply until 2026. NHS North Central London is working closely with partners to support patients during this time.
What We’re Doing
To reduce the impact on patients, we’ve taken the following steps:
-
Guidance for prescribers – GPs are being supported with advice on alternative PERT brands.
-
Sourcing alternatives – We’re working with regional procurement teams to import PERT from abroad, increasing supply locally.
-
Supporting pharmacies and hospitals – Our specialist teams are helping pharmacies and prescribers find the best solutions for their patients.
What Patients Can Do
If you’re struggling to get your usual PERT medicine, here’s what you can do:
- Speak to your GP – Ask for a separate PERT prescription, making it easier to find at other pharmacies.
- Check other pharmacies – If your regular one can’t help, try other local options or ask about alternative brands.
- Plan ahead – Order prescriptions at least two weeks in advance to allow time for sourcing.
- Seek advice – Speak to your GP, dietitian, or specialist nurse if you’re struggling with symptoms.
- Use helplines – Organisations like Pancreatic Cancer UK have support lines with expert guidance.

We’d like to thank our GP practices, hospitals, pharmacies, and patient support organisations for their ongoing efforts to support those affected.
