Somers Town Health Centre

When the unit next door to Somers Town Medical Centre became available, we got in touch with the North Central London ICB lead to see if this would be of any interest. The ICB responded that they were looking to relocate King’s Cross Surgery, a GP practice, to free up space at St Pancras Hospital’s redevelopment which was required to enable Moorfields Eye Hospital to relocate there.

The solution

NHSPS agreed a new lease for the unit and procured Ingleton Wood to design the extended Somers Town Medical Centre. This would create one larger health facility that could host the existing practice and King’s Cross Surgery. As well as being extended, the space needed refurbished and reconfigured.

NHSPS was able to fund this through the disposals policy which reinvests proceeds from the sale of surplus sites within the NHSPS estate into local health economies.

The NHSPS Construction team oversaw the delivery of this £920,000 scheme, reconfiguring and refurbishing 300 sqm including new lighting, flooring, and decoration. We managed these works end-to-end whilst keeping the health centre fully operational, minimising disruption to service delivery throughout.

The impact

The refurbishment and reconfiguration of the new extended Somers Town Medical Centre successfully completed in summer 2022, allowing the Kings Cross Surgery to move in.

The medical centre has six new clinical rooms, an upgraded reception, meeting space and staff welfare facilities to make it larger, more modern, compliant, and welcoming space to better serve patients and staff alike.

It was completed in a timely manner and to budget and now serves a combined patient list of 16,000.

Both practices co-locating on one site has enabled more collaborative and joined-up care for the local community.

King’s Cross Surgery’s former space was handed back to enable the phase 1 of the St Pancreas Hospital redevelopment.
