UCLH vaccination team to deliver 1000th COVID-19 outreach clinic

On Tuesday 21 May, the University College London Hospitals (UCLH) Vaccination Outreach Team will deliver its 1000th COVID-19 clinic since it started in April 2021.  Guests will be joining the vaccine bus on the day to celebrate this milestone.

As part of the COVID-19 pandemic response, the UCLH team collaborated with many partners including NHS North Central London Integrated Care Board (NCL ICB), Middlesex University, the five NCL local authorities and local charities and community groups to set up outreach clinics aimed at communities under-represented in vaccine uptake figures. To date they have administered over 42,000 vaccines.

In addition, the team offers MMR, flu and polio vaccinations, along with smoking cessation advice, blood pressure, BMI and loneliness checks. They can also run careers fairs alongside vaccination clinics to encourage local people to consider employment in health and social care.

Staffing the clinics has been a huge achievement. 1000 clinics in, we want to recognise the achievements of the UCLH Workforce Management Service which, together with healthcare delivery partner Acacium, recruits and rosters staff to run the clinics. To retain talent within the NHS, the Reservist Programme was set up in 2023. Over the past year, individuals working in the Reservist Programme have worked over 100,000 hours across NCL trusts, helping to ensure services are staffed to safe levels.

Speaking about the milestone, Laura Churchward, Director of Strategy and SRO for COVID-19 vaccination at UCLH said, ‘COVID-19 vaccination rates in NCL are above the London average. I’m very proud that the team has supported so many people to get protected who might otherwise not have received a vaccination. I hope the whole team and our invited guests enjoy celebrating this achievement.’

Dr Chris Caldwell, Chief Nursing Officer at North Central London ICB, added, ‘We are very proud of the team effort to bring vaccination to the places in our communities where it is needed the most, helping us improve access and reduce health inequalities. I wish today’s event, every success.’
